The Hummer is back, but not in the oil-burning military guise we’re used to seeing. The mental image the new, silent battery-powered truck will conjure up will no longer be a hulking military tank sitting next to a man with a bean shave and a cigar clenched between his teeth; it will now be a tableau of a flower, growing in a crater on the surface of the moon, or something like that. Probably.
We’ve got the lunar allusion down, anyway. GMC describes the Hummer EV as its “moonshot,” a term first coined by Apollo astronauts to describe the long odds of their putting a man on the moon in the late 1960s.
The term quickly evolved into a colloquialism for an extremely ambitious project or mission undertaken to achieve a monumental goal, and GMC says it embodies perfectly the design and development process of the new Humvee, which it pulled off in record time.
