Cheap Chinese EVs may head to Canada before U.S.

Everyone’s afraid of the Chinese. “If there are no trade barriers established, they [Chinese car companies] will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world,” says Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Ford CEO Jim Farley, meanwhile, is so worried about Chinese automakers — “If you cannot compete fair and square with the Chinese, then 20 per cent to 30 per cent of your revenue is at risk” — that he’s willing to partner with other OEMs to build out a universal, cost-effective battery program.

Arch-rival Stellantis, meanwhile, may have already capitulated, its CEO, Carlos Tavares, recently announcing plans to build cars based on architecture from Chinese affiliate Leapmotor in either Europe or North America — or both! — as a way to combat looming price pressures.
